Season 1, Episode 3: The Power of Intuition

Meet Vera, a treehugger, crazy cat lady, model hermit, and a forever free spirit who will never claim just one career. In this episode, we dish on the pros and cons of working in the customer service industry, working in remote lodge jobs, how we went from being enemies to friends, her childhood in Bosnia, trauma bonding with coworkers, and using your intuition to help you find your next perfect job.

Vera and I became friends while working at North King Lodge together in the summer of 2018. We were both dockhands, she was the morning shift and I was the evening shift, and we worked side-by-side scrubbing boats clean of dried blood, fetching beer for clients, and weighing fish after fish after fish. I’m elated that we remained friends until this day, and I have been lucky enough to glean wisdom from her every time we meet.

If you listen to the podcast all the way through, you’ll hear us talk about:

  • The journey of moving around from job to job and why she’s not a “career person”

  • Her time working as a nanny and what it’s like to care for someone else’s child

  • Growing up in Bosnia, immigrating to Germany as a refugee when she was a pre-teen, and then immigrating to Canada as a young adult

  • How to form a community and make friends in new places

  • The pros and cons of working in the customer service/hospitality industry

  • Trauma bonding with your coworkers

  • Her role as “the mom” of the friend group

  • The story of how we went from enemies to friends and our Hammock Island experience

  • What it’s like working in a remote lodge job setting

  • How to deal with difficult coworkers

  • Using intuition to help you find the perfect job

  • Expressing gratitude in the job you have and not being afraid to leave a job you hate

  • Having passions that you don’t monetize to balance the tedium of work

  • The joy of not being a people pleaser and how to get great tips without kissing ass

  • Her weirdest jobs, including a short stint working as a phone sex operator

I hope you enjoy listening to this podcast as much as I did recording it!

Thank you so much Vera for coming on my podcast. You are a joy and an inspiration and I’m so glad our paths crossed so many years ago.
