Season 1; Episode 10: Diving Off the Deep End

Meet Maggie, a backpacker, human rights student, vegan chef, yoga teacher, and forever explorer. In this episode, Maggie and I talk about working abroad, finding a deeper purpose in traveling, becoming an international student in Ireland, seasons of transition, thriving in chaos and cultural immersions, and her next move to Malta.

Maggie and I first met in high school, dressed as birds, while in the theatre production Honk! Shortly after graduating high school, Maggie set off on a globe-trotting adventure and has yet to settle down. I’ve been following her journey on Instagram all these years, and we were able to get together briefly over Christmas break to record this episode, where we talk about:

  • How she got her first job working abroad as an Au Pair in Europe

  • Backpacking and volunteering in Asia

  • Working in the hospitality sector in Canada aboard the Rocky Mountaineer, which sparked her love of trains

  • Being the first foreigner to work on a rail line in Australia

  • Searching for a greater meaning and purpose behind her travels

  • Moving to Ireland to get her Bachelor of Arts in Human Rights

  • What it was like to be forced into one spot during the COVID lockdown

  • Thriving during seasons of transition, moments of chaos, and cultural immersion

  • Trusting in the universe and humanity while traveling

  • Building awareness in your surroundings, whether at home or abroad

  • Pursuing dreams and defining life goals

  • Helping the world through the soft skills gained from traveling and working in tourism, paired with academic skills in university

  • Her next steps interning with a human rights organization in Malta
