Teryn and I met the same way that I met my other podcast guests Darien, Chandy, and Catherine, at The Cascade, UFV’s student-run newspaper. Teryn walked into the office one day as Chandy and I were sitting at our computer editing articles to apply for the position of Sports Writer. We interviewed him then and there, and he got the job on the spot. He also started working as a Co-op student with CIVL radio, The Cascade’s sister society on campus, where he is the program manager and host of a show about Formula One. Teryn is an avid sports journalist and has covered Abbotsford Canucks and BC Lions games, and is currently doing a semester abroad in London.
I was thrilled to have Teryn on the podcast and I was so impressed with how openly he talked about his experience living with manic depression and advocated heavily for counseling and the use of medication to stabilize your mental health. If you’ve been listening to this podcast since the first episode, you may be following the evolution of the effectiveness of my SSRI. During episode one with Darien, I told her the story of how I ended up on Sertralin and lamented that it hasn’t had any effect on me yet. Recording this podcast with Teryn was the first recording I did where I was feeling the medication’s full effects, and was getting over the hump of this depressive season of my life. Teryn and I talked about the importance of getting the right medication and the right dosage.
