Season 1; Episode 14: The Soft Life

Meet Jacqueline, a visual storyteller, immigration youth worker, strategic communicator, and champion of women’s empowerment. In this episode, Jacqueline and I talk about what it was like moving to three different African nations before the age of ten, the struggles of being an international student, how to take care of your mental health while working in the non-profit sector, and what living ‘the soft life’ means to her.

Jacqueline and I had a few classes together as we studied for our Global Development Studies degree at the same time. We’ve kept in touch after graduating, and I was so excited to have her on to talk about her life story, her various jobs, and what it’s like to live a soft life.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Jacqueline’s three jobs for three different non-profits, as an immigrant youth worker, a home care aid, and a social media coordinator

  • How she is putting her Global Development studies degree with a minor in Communications to use

  • The struggles of being an international student

  • Her childhood; being born in a refugee camp in the Central African Republic, moving to Sudan a few years later, and then moving to Uganda, all before the age of 10

  • Her future aspirations to go to law school and open up her own consulting firm

  • Her experience as a published writer through a United Nations initiative

  • What empowerment means to her

  • How to achieve a healthy work-life balance

  • What The Soft Life means to her

  • Her favorite spa treatment

  • How to treat yourself as a university student on a tight budget

  • Building boundaries and learning emotional intelligence as a non-profit worker

  • Learning how to say “No” to people
